ELA (Same info as last week, sorry NWEA took up a large portion of our time)
In ELA we are going to be participating in a variety of lessons through the use of Scholastic Scope Magazine. The 6th grade ELA teachers use this magazine to teach informational text along with other skills
that include conventions, inference, argument writing, text evidence, mood, word choice, summarizing, and reading comprehension. The magazine includes narrative non-fiction and informational text, which is paired
with a play. We will be performing the play that is based on a best-selling novel the Book Thief. Also,
we will be examining two texts (one narrative and the other informational text) to look at the topic of using robots in school because some students can’t attend their school due to severe peanut allergies. Lastly, students will be participating in writing activities that include a debate essay, editing others work, and creative writing.
SOCIAL STUDIES
In this week’s lessons, students will explore the important role of people in the pre-Revolution time period. They begin by learning about three important women: Phillis Wheatley, Abigail Adams, and Mercy Otis Warren. Next, they research one of the people listed on the “People Charts” they have been creating
throughout the unit. Finally, will they explore the issue of loyalists versus patriots through a picture book
and use a primary source. In the next activity students will summarize what they have learned in the unit by creating a timeline of significant events leading to the American Revolution. They begin by examining timelines in a textbook. Next, they sort and sequence event cards as they explore cause and effect relationships.
SCIENCE
During Science students are defining roles for their Building a Terrarium project (which will be completed in class). Students have been placed in groups and are creating job roles for each individual team member. In this
activity students will create and write job responsibilities that will help each group member participate in making their project the best it can be. Some of the ecosystems students will be replicating are the Tropical Rainforest, Swamp, Jungle, Tundra, and Deciduous Forest. Most likely we will be taking the next couple weeks to complete this assignment in class. Along with building the terrianums students will be putting together a
short commercial to persuade people to visit their ecosystem. For the commercial students will be using WE Video which is part of the applications within Google Docs. Students will get a class session to play around and figure out the functionality of WE Video.
Math
In lessons 2.7 and 2.8 students will be learning how to write decimals as fractions and then turning fractions into decimals. Students will use a variety of skills to accomplish this goal. Some of these skills include writing fractions in the simplest form, writing decimals as mixed numbers, and use estimation to solve real world problems. After lesson 2.8 is complete students will be taking a quiz that assesses their knowledge of sections 2.5-2.8. To round out the week students will be completing Chapter 2 review and taking the Chapter 2 Test on Friday.
